MARK TAYLOR
Name: Mark Taylor
Aliases: None
Gender: Male
Fandom: Vampire Academy
Age: 42
Species: Moroi (Water specialty)
Morality: Lawful good.
Position: Defense attorney in the Royal Vampire Court
Physical Description: Mark is surprisingly scraggly-looking for a lawyer. He seems to have permanent stubble across his sharp, square jaw, and in his off time is fond of wearing- of all things- an orange beanie. There's a workplace pool running on why he wears that beanie. The smart money is on 'It was a gift"; Mark's best friend and the godmother to his daughter, Crystal, knitted the beanie when she got sick of Mark's ears turning blue from his permanent state of cold around his daughter.
Mark has dark, clever eyes and narrow eyebrows, and his dark hair is quite spiky. He wears a hooded parka almost permanently around the house, most likely due to the fact that Rina exudes cold.
Personality: Mark is affectionate and paternal, and tends to treat pretty much anyone younger than him as if they're his own children. Despite the fact he can't eat normal food himself, he loves to cook, and is delighted to have house guests that are non-Moroi, as Moroi and Strigoi cannot digest normal food. He puts an intense amount of love into his cooking, and secretly experiments with blood taken from feeders to see if he can create a dish suitable for vampire consumption- you have to admit, blood would get bland after thirty-nine years of eating nothing else.
He believes firmly in justice, and fights tooth and nail in court to make sure the right person is convicted. He dislikes taking clients if he's not sure they're innocent, although sometimes a client with a technicality can convince him to work for a Not Guilty verdict. He especially dislikes the concept of death row, and often works to keep his clients from heading there.
Strengths: Loyal, respected, intelligent
Weaknesses: Idealistic, trusting, tends to believe in black-and-white morality.
History: Mark Taylor passed the bar at 26 years of age, specialising in criminal law. He married not long after, meeting Linda Johnson at a hotel when attending an event. The two had one child together- Karina, commonly called Rina- but separated not long afterwards due to that useless catch-all term 'Inconceivable differences'. To absolutely nobody's shock, Linda received both the house and custody of Rina ("When doesn't the wife get the house and the kid?") and was swift to kick Mark out of their life, denying him even visitation. Mark, to his credit, barely faltered in his career; now sans worrying about anyone ordering hits on his wife and child, he was free to take on more brutal cases of murder and gang wars.
He wasn't quite sure what went wrong in their relationship, but it turned out Linda wasn't exactly the best parent for Rina. When he was 39, he was informed by authorities that they had concerns about his daughter. It turned out Rina had been filling in her school contact forms and including his details as the secondary contact- so when he was informed that there were suspicions about Linda's parenting, the only thing stopping him from slamming her into jail was the fact that he couldn't be his own lawyer. With the help of a colleague who actually knew something about family law, Mark proved that Linda was unfit to care for Rina- and swiftly took the case to high court. Linda had absolutely no chance- aside from his own friends at the Prosecutor's Office, many of Mark's colleagues remembered Rina and called in their prosecutor friends. By the end of it, the actual prosecutor for the case had the combined weight of the entire office behind him, deftly destroying the arguments of Linda as the defendant. It had been the first time Mark was happy to hear a Guilty verdict.
From that point on, Mark reclaimed his house and daughter, and set about repairing their relationship. By the events of The Blood Uprising, just three years after the brutal court battle, Mark and Rina were seemingly inseparable.
